Best works of art are created when the creator learns something in the process of making it.
They are created out of curiosity and hard labour. Experience and skill might be helpful, but are not relevant when creating a piece of work. Of course it’s in artist’s best interest to hone their craft, but knowing creates mediocrity.
An artist has to let go of the idea of control. When creating something new, a sense of control is inevitably lost, because there is no point of reference to compare the creation to. First instinct might be to retrieve and come back to what we know, but that hinders growth. The water might be too deep for us to touch the bottom with our toes. It takes courage and audacity to continue working on the idea, even without a point of reference.
